One of the downsides of the introduction of the GDPR last May was that
many of my clients were worried about using their client information in their
marketing. And so they stopped telling
them about offers and other products or services via email.
What a waste!
We all receive plenty of emails every day and yes, some of them are
blatantly spam, but email is still the most effective way to communicate
directly with your clients or contacts.
If you’re proud of what you do and you delight your customers, why
wouldn’t you want to tell them and your potential customers about what your
business is up to?
In a recent blog on the site Smart Insights, they wrote that average
open rates for emails are still between 10% to 15%, and for small to medium businesses
click through rates are close on 7%.
You can see that using email in your overall marketing strategy is worth
it, especially when you link it to your social media, print and networking.
Emailing your contacts and meeting the requirements of the GDPR is not
impossible. There are some things that
you need to have in place, but don’t let that put you off!
Top tips from the Business Tamer
- Personalise your emails in either the subject
line or the email itself - Only
use 4-7 words or 40 characters in your subject line - Symbols
and punctuations – don’t be excessive with the !!! or the £££ - Regularly
clean up your mailing lists - Using
an email service can help with allowing your contacts to unsubscribe easily - Try
and segment or categorise your mailing lists so that you can target relevant
and interesting content to your contacts - Design your email so that it looks good; use
your branding colours and logo
